Lorton, Va. 22079
TITLE: “Variations on a Theme”

DATES: June 2 – June 27th, 2010
RECEPTION: June 12, In conjunction with Second Saturdays June 12th 6-PM.
Come to Building 5 at 5:00 for the UNVEILING of our "5"!

June is busting out all over and that means summer is here! Watermelon, ice cream, and a sunny hillside are just some images that summer evokes. Come enjoy the whimsy and fun of “Variations on a Theme” with Denise Shamoun Phalan, Robin Rosner, and Trish Vermillion as they share their various views of summer depicted in oil paintings and porcelain tiles.
Denise Shamoun Phalan is getting a kick out of her love of Red Shoes. Her paintings offer us a playful glimpse at quirky and look-at-me summer foot fashions.

Robin Rosner has a passion for landscapes. Her paintings exhibit a freshness that is both graceful and winsome. Widely traveled, she continues to work with photo's creating a surprising effect of light and color.
Trish Vermillion moved to Fredericksburg in 2008 and was among the first group of artists to inhabit the studio space at the old Workhouse. Trish began as a glass artist and has been painting and firing porcelain portraits since 2007. "Both media I have chosen are somewhat obscure and historic. I find it rewarding to share knowledge about the history of both with the public."

MAY: Positively Negative

Original Relief Prints by Norma Pfaff and Scratchboard by Tuula Rissanen Ross
Dates: Wednesday April 28 thru Sunday, May 30, 2010
Meet-The-Artist Reception
Saturday, May 8, 2010 from 7-9 p.m.

Pfaff’s interest in working on paper brought her to printmaking and the process of creating a print has kept her working in this media. Printmaking is a rich experience, tactile as well as visual. Her hand pulled prints have been part of the Washington Area Printmakers Calendar for 10 years and has required editions of as many as 150 hand pulled original prints.

Tuula Rissanen Ross is proud of her artistic ancestry. Her great uncle, Juho Rissanen, is a renowned Finnish artist. Her father, Kauko, was a master woodcarver who carved over 5,000 portraits in his lifetime, and her mother is a gifted fiber artist. She grew up in a household full of works of art that inspired her to draw and paint from an early age. Tuula’s medium of expression is scratchboard. This consists of a thin board layered with clay and top layered with ink. The ink is scraped away with a sharp tool to reveal the clay beneath. Often thin layers of colored ink are added after the scraping is done.

You can always see their work at Studio Building 5 and their individual studios 509 and 512 respectively at the Workhouse, Lorton, Va. (Corner of Ox and Lorton Roads) www.Workhousearts.org, http://workhousebuilding5.blogspot.com/
For further information or an interview email the artist directly at npfaff1@verizon.net and tuula6@cox.net
